Medicine Cards: The Discovery of Power Through the Ways of Animals/Book and Cards
Published in Unknown Binding by Bear & Co (October, 1988)
Authors: Jamie, Sams, Angela C. Werneke, and David Carson
Average review score:

Excellent source of animal understanding.
I have been using these cards for several years now and though they are supposed to be for entertainment only, I, and others, have found them to be so very appropriate to current trends in our daily lives. We never stop learning!!!

Gentle and easy to use!
I have been using this deck of cards for years. I have even made a rabbit-skin bag to keep it in so that I can take them with me wherever I choose to go. The book offeres several forms of readings, some of which are fun, some of which are kinda scary (I still rarely do the one that looks at your subconscious) and all of which are informative. If you draw cards reversed, the book has suggestions on how to right the problems that may be present. All in all, though there are a few corny puns and jokes in the text, it is useful and gentle in it's approach. I would highly recommend this to someone looking to buy a set of cards...it's easier to master than a Tarot deck and less cryptic. Good for beginner and for adept alike

Aspects of Your Self
This is a deck that I was able to apply to my life right away. I asked for my animal totems and from the cards, I was able to understand aspects of myself that I was aware of but never really examined. For example, one of my totems was the coyote - the joker animal and it explained alot of my self sabotaging behavior! I love these cards because I was able to learn from the spirits embodied by each creature and as a result, I feel much closer to them in my daily life. I used to take animals and creatures around me for granted, but now I have learned a greater appreciation of them.

A Knock at Midnight: Inspiration from the Great Sermons of Reverend Martin Luther King, Jr.
Published in Digital by Warner Books ()
Authors: Martin Luther, Jr. King, Clayborne Carson, and Peter Halloran
Average review score:

A Profound Message
The sermons in A Knock at Midnight are both deeply moving and a powerful reminder of the greatness of Dr. King. This collection should be read and heard by everyone, especially the young of today who have been fed a Dr. King who somehow only delivered one speech ("I Have a Dream"). As a middle school teacher I found the sermons to be an excellent way for my students to move beyond the platitudes about Dr. King to a much deeper understanding of his life and ministry. To read and listen to these great sermons is an absolutely wonderful experience, but at the same time a sad reminder that today we have no great voice of moral authority like his. Fortunately we do have his words and voice preserved for us and our children.

I wish I could give this EXPERIENCE 10 stars!
Notice I refer to the cassettes and the companion book as an EXPERIENCE as I both listened to and read the REVEREND King! Although the media focused on the visible part of his ministry, the civil rights movement, his sermons are profound and awesome in their implications for today as well as their in their powerful delivery during the mid-1950's through 1960's. Although I will cherish both the cassette series and the book, it is through hearing the SPEAKING of Dr. King that really made me breathless! Thank you LORD God for sending us your messenger Dr. King to give us a wonderful earthly ministry for a brilliant and brief time (much like Jesus Christ). Simply awesome!

A fabulous collection of soul-stirring preaching.
A fabulous collection of soul-stirring preaching by one of this century's finest preachers. Many people know King as a great political leader, fiery orator, and creative organizer. This collection of sermons will convince the world that King was first and foremost an anointed preacher. His sermons ring with authenticity and resound with relevancy. Kings messages speak profoundly to our troubled times and offer both prophetic insight and divine guidance as we attempt to find our way into the next millinium. This collection of sermons, with their superb introductions and commentaries, is perhaps one of the finest efforts of its kind. It will certainly be a source of pleasure and insight for generations to come.

Carnival of the Animals: By Saint-Saens (Classical Music for Kids)
Published in School & Library Binding by Henry Holt & Company, Inc. (April, 1999)
Authors: Barrie Carson Turner, Sue Williams, and Camille Saint-Saens
Average review score:

One of the best
This is one of the best books I have seen on Saint Saëns' Carnival of the Animals. The pictures are bright and colourful, descriptions of the instruments very clear and the explanation of the correlation between the instruments and the animals very easy and fun to follow. It is an extra bonus to have the CD included and each animal track numbered. I would highly recommend this to any elementary teacher, even with little or no of music experience.

Good classical music book w/CD for youngsters
Completely enjoyed by our 2 year old and his parents. Pictures are absolutely beautiful. Having the CD is useful. Each of the 14 tracks has a beautifully illustrated 2 page spread, which makes it easy to follow the music - the book and music work very well together. The text, which is written in a perfectly simple and direct and short manner so as to render it very useful, helps the listener focus on different aspects of the music and appreciate the music by putting it in terms we could understand more easily (e.g. for the Lion's March - "the strings are playing the lion's marching tune as he walks...Sometimes he roars loudly. Can you hear the pianos playing the lion's roar?") Our toddler loves classical music but this is a great choice for any child or adult. The entire package - the CD, the format of the book, the pictures and the text - really make this a great way of experiencing the music and just a plain good old story.

MUST HAVE FOR PARENTS AND TEACHERS!!
Of any age... this is such a treat! You will love it. Wonderful way to bring music in through language arts.

The Letter of James
Published in Hardcover by Apollos (Enk) (January, 2000)
Authors: Douglas J. Moo and D. A. Carson
Average review score:

Solid and informative
A good commentary that will get you familiar with the many different interpretations of James, but will ultimately supply you with a rock solid study. Especially good is his treatment of the "problems" people often encounter with James 2.

There are plenty of footnotes that refer you to other works for further study concerning some opposing views, though not by any means an overkill on footnotes.

I am using this text in my "General Epistles" class at Lee University (Pentecostal - Church of God - Clevland, TN.) It should be noted though that this is not an academic level commentary, but is designed for lay and clergy alike. Hard as it may seem, Moo was able to squeeze out 191 pages of commentary.

Excellect commentary
Basically I use this book as my resource of the Sunday school
class. The more I read it, the more I like it. Moo is very careful in tracing the meaning of the texts by examining the
Old Testament, extra-biblical literatures and the context. If some texts are controversial, he is very even-handed in handling different solutions and comes up with a reasonable conclusion.

The even more important thing is he does not only render good
exegesis but also provide some good applications in christian life. I feel very impressed by his insightful prospectives.

Great book!!

Great commentary
This is the only commentary I have read on James, so I can't fairly compare it to others. But I can't imagine reading a more lucid, informed, intriguing, and just all around Godly understanding of what can be one of the most difficult books of the NT to understand. Moo handles each passage with clarity, being fair to different views and presenting his own conclusions. The book also has a well articulated introduction and discussion of time, place, and authorship.

I would have wished Moo had included Greek words in their original letters as well as their transliteration. I also wish he had interacted a bit more with the Greek text. Moo, however, was only staying true to the general format of the Pillar series, which assumes no previous Greek study on the part of the reader.

Both the hard cover as well as its dusk jacket are well manufactured and good looking. The pages are nice and the small size of the book makes it fairly easy to handle.

Overall, one of the best commentaries on any book that I have read.

One night mum olga and hattie and olive go a ball and leave the dirty scullery maid but ella finds Lucinda and makes a wish. This a great book and very enchanteding .

A Fabulous Fantasy
When I first borrowed this book, it was purely to kill time. Little did I know that this book was to be one of the most interestiing, humorous and enchanting book I have ever read. Ella or Eleanor is the daughter of a shrewd but rich merchant. When she was a baby, a fairy, Lucinda, cast a silly obedience spell on her. Ever since, Ella had to obey every single command given, regardless whether or not it was appropriate, and most of the time, against Ella's wishes. Luckily, Ella grew up in a household which loved her dearly, espeacially her Mother and her cook cum fairy godmother, Mandy. However, after her Mother dies, her father, a man which had never cared much for Ella, decides to send her to finishing school. Much as Ella hated it, she had to obey. Worst of all, she could tell no one of the spell cast on her, a promise to her dying mother to prevent Ella from being exploited. From there on, she meets wicked and greedy step-sisters, a downright horrid step mother, some orgres and of course, her good friend turned loved one, Prince Charmont, as Ella ventures to find Lucinda to remove the silly obedient spell from her. This stories spans a few years as Ella struggles to maintain her dignity and wits while searching for a solution and sacrificing her own love and feelings for her Prince and her country, with hilaious results and touching scenes. This book is a definite must-read.

Modern Cinderella
Ella Enchanted by Gail Carson Levine is a fairy tale about Ella of Frell who has been given a "gift" of obedience by a fairy. Ella constantly was made to do things against her will. She tried breaking the curse many times, but her efforts were fruitless. Ella ran into many obstacles in her life, such as her mother passing away and her father remarrying, being in the finishing school with her stepsisters, and meeting magical characters like gnomes, ogres and giants. It was not until her adventures brought her to numerous encounters with Prince Charmont, Ella's curse was broken by the magical powers of love.
Ella Enchanted is a modern fantasy novel and is very easy to read. The language that Gail Carson Levine uses is very descriptive and paints a precise picture. The reader is constantly wondering where the next adventure will bring Ella.
I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who enjoys reading fairy tales. When I started to read this novel, I could not put it down until I was finished. The story completely submerges you into the world of magic and supernatural characters. Ella Enchanted is for all ages to read and enjoy.

Roy Buchanan: American Axe
Published in Paperback by Backbeat Books (01 September, 2001)
Author: Phil Carson
Average review score:

The Soul of Roy
This is not only a great rock biography, but a great biography period. Though most "rock stars" seek the spotlight, Roy avoided it. Yet Carson has managed to get closer to who he was than most bio writers get to their subjects, who give the public a persona but hide themselves more cleverly than R. B. This book is of interest to Roy fans, rock or country guitar afficianados, anyone interested in the early history of white rock and roll and anyone interested in exploring the world of a conflicted genius. Carson spends important time describing the early days of Buchanan in small town California. This is much more than the usual cursory treatment, for the seeds of who he became were rooted there. Carson makes few judgements, and lets Roy's friends and fellow players provide much of the insight. In many ways a sad story, but not maudlin. Although you wish it could have turned out differently, maybe it could not have. Buchanan was a man who had a chance at what we call everything, and turned it down to play his own music his own way. Was he a tragic figure or a hero? Read this book and decide for yourself.

World's Greatest Unknown Guitarist - American Axe
I'm a huge fan of Roy Buchanan, so no doubt I was excited when I heard about this full-length biography. Despite the fact that Roy was the most talented of the guitar virtuosos of our time, his music remained largely unknown for the general audience. And even for a hardcore fans, little was known about Roy's life and background.

The author Phil Carson concentrates on the musician Roy Buchanan. He has done a throughout research work on Roy's early influences, as well as interviewed and collected other musicians experiences with Roy. Despite being a fan, the author manages to give us an objective, and also a critical view of Roy's work. The numerous anecdotes given in the book lighten up the story.

This is essential book not only for those specifically interested in Roy Buchanan and his music, but also for guitar players in general as Roy's guitars and techniques are presented.

And while reading it be sure you have some of Roy's music in your stereo!

Roy Buchanan fans rejoice!
At long last comes a book that, for the first time, gives a detailed look into the life and music of this gifted (and largely unheralded) guitarist.

Even those unfamiliar with Roy's particular genius will find "American Axe" a fascinating chronicle. The book provides not only insight into Roy's early influences but gives an historical perspective to the very beginnings of rock and roll itself. You get a real feel for what life on the club circuit was like for the journeyman musician in the 50's and 60's.

Phil Carson has obviously taken great pains to garner first-hand accounts about Roy from family, friends and musical colleagues in order to piece together some understanding of what made Roy tick as accurately and fairly as possible. Roy was generally media-shy so there are many eye-opening revelations here.

I couldn't make a higher recommendation for this book. It is a much overdue and welcome addition to the Roy Buchanan fan's collection.

Medicine Cards: The Discovery of Power Through the Ways of Animals
Published in Hardcover by St. Martin's Press (July, 1999)
Authors: Jamie Sams, David Carson, and Angela C. Werneke
Average review score:

A deck to be approached with great, great respect.
My first introduction to totemism was a group of pagans I hung around with in college. Some of them were really, really enthusiastic about this deck, but I only picked one up for myself within the last few years. I even did my senior thesis on the idea of personal, urban totemism. And even with all that, "Medicine Cards" scare the heck out of me.

Unless you believe that the only important totem animals are the ones that you can find on belt buckles (Eagle, Bear, Random Big Cat, etc.), there's no real Major Arcana/Minor Arcana distinction here. Every single card in this deck is big ju-ju. My first two readings kinda freaked me out, really. If archetypes, animal mythos and anthropomorphism are pretty much second-nature to you, just give up and get this deck. You will probably understand the cards without needing to check the book all that often.

Unless there was a slip-up at the publisher's, the standard deck does not come with a little reference pamphlet like most tarot decks do. It comes with a medium-sized hard back book (A nice treat, but not convenient for lugging around spontaneously -- this could be why they made the "Just for Today" deck) that explains each card, including an occasional story, and some spreads and an exercise to figure out which totem animals represent you in this spread. Two of three totems that I'd already figured out for myself showed up in the exercise, and the third was kinda iffy for me at that point anyway.

The cards are 5.5" by 3" and have an alarmingly boring back -- government blue with a single yellow lightening bolt. They're coated with something incredibly shiny, but aren't particularly slippery. There are 52 cards in the deck, plus 9 blanks so that you can fill it in with any animals that you think are missing. They're almost a little too large for me to shuffle them easily (and I've been told that I have large hands for my gender). The book's table of contents tells you what animals are included.

The artwork works inwards from a white boarder to a thinner red boarder that also bisects the interior design. The top half of the inside is sky-blue, and the bottom is an earth-tone green. In the middle is a Medicine Shield inside which is a picture of the featured animal spirit. Above, in the blue, along with the number of the card, is the aniamls name in a black script font.

The artwork is good. It's not cute, and it's not dazzlingly beautiful in a way that draws me, but I'm still impressed with this deck for all my nitpicky comments. If you think you're up for the challenge, I recommend "Medicine Cards."

medicine card by jamie sams
I BOUGHT THESE CARDS AFTER PURCHING HER BOOK DANCING THE DREAM I can not tell in this short space how much these card have help me find my path of enlightment. I have been looking for different ways for peace of mind for years. Thank you Jamie for showing me the way thru "all of relations". I have to say when I got home I wonder what the cards would say. I have always been impressed with spiders. And when I did my totem reading the frist card I picked was the spider. Also I love dragon flys and that was my last card of the seven. Any one wanting to connect with nature and find your path thru nature. this is a must. Also when I got it was the last in the store so don't put off getting these cards. you will be amazed. MUST READ DANCING THE DREAM. I have read many a book on finding happieness and this was the best by far/

Cards for shamans, witches, and plain animal lovers
These cards a amazing! The artwork is good, the companion book is very in depth, and the readings are great.

In the beginning of the book, it tells you how to use the cards to discover your very own totem animals. After you discover what animals are your totems, you flip to the page the animal is on and find out all about the animal as well as what the animal has to teach you. The book is also very good to use if you see an animal in the wild or if you have visions. Pay close attention. These animals have alot to teach you.

This is one of my favorite divination decks as well as teaching animal medicine. The deck also includes some blank cards so you can include animals that may not appear in the deck. Don't get me wrong, the companion book is not the only book that can teach you about certain types of medicine, but if you don't have any other books, it is a good start. The animals never stop teaching us.

Taming Your Gremlin (Revised Edition) : A Surprisingly Simple Method for Getting Out of Your Own Way
Published in Paperback by Quill (08 July, 2003)
Author: Rick Carson
Average review score:

Clever, trendy, helpful and easy to read
By using the term "Gremlin",Carson has borrowed the popular terminology of the personal coaching movement to label our inner-resistances, negative self-talk, and fantasies about "what will people think?" This is a clever and current way of talking about our super-egos -- to use the classic, Freudian label for the critical voices Carson wants us to fight. His approach is a useful way of externalizing the inner critic that hampers us and will be palatable to many who want to avoid self-blame and remain in the realm of positive thinking. Carson's writing is clear, entertaining and easy to read, and the many illustrations are fun. The most helpful aspect of Carson's book is his clever way of talking about mindfulness. The message is simple -- if you focus on the present moment you won't worry about the future or dwell on the past. Mindfulness is a wonderful stress reduction technique, popularized by meditation gurus like Jon Kabat-Zinn. Carson is unique in that he gives mindfulness the twist of a 21rst century coach rather than a '90s new age flavor. I am a licensed clinical psychologist and personal coach and I would recommend this book highly. To my taste, however, it is a bit too "cutesy" to get five stars.

This will send your Gremlin tremblin'!
Whoa! What an amazing book! I know I 'm going to be reading it over and over because each time I flip it open I find something that hits me in a way it didn't the first time I read through. For those of us who have been waiting for something more from Rick Carson, this feeds the salivary juices quite well!
This newly Revised Version of Taming Your Gremlin® has a super clear road map to capturing self-limiting beliefs and concepts that get in our way as we work towards creating fulfilling relationships and obtaining our goals. It's perfect for anyone in the human service profession who is looking for just the right book to recommend to clients. While the original version was wonderful in it's simplicity, this version has so much more content for those of us who want to go deeper by using the workbook style exercises. Yet it still maintains a level of playfulness and humor with the familiar illustrations and bold print that helps keep the content from feeling so heavy. Unlike other self-help books that teach certain ideas about how to improve our lives, this book has an experiential element to it, a beautiful mystical quality about it that goes beyond the words. It reinforces the Zen theory of change and reminds us that in most circumstances, it's more valuable to focus our awareness on how we are rather than why we are. I give it your highest rating!

I loved this book!
I can't imagine someone being disappointed in this book. Wise, practical, funny, and true, it is far and away the best "self-help" book on the market. I personally know coaches, counselors, teachers and business people who rely on it heavily in their work. If you are a human being over the age of ten "Taming Your Gremlin" will help you live life joyfully.

Hope, determination and god's blessings
I read this book in which I had briefly heard the story of Dr. Ben Carson and was amazed at all of his accomplishments. This book was very inspiring and should be recommended reading for all youths and even adults to show them that their dreams can come true. Dr. Carson's story has really helped to inspire me for when times start getting tough that I should look to god for guidance.

The best book
I really liked this book. It is a real story of Ben Carson. When he was young other children called him dummy. He always wanted to be a doctor. Sometimes he thought that it could never happen but his mom would cheer him up. I think it's a great influence to kids. You should read this great book. Jk

Excellent book for classrooms
I have added this book to my classroom library for 5th graders. They enjoy reading books about diverse people. Ben Carson is our classroom hero!
